Niaouli (Melaleuca quinquenervia) is another oil in the myrtle family (Myrtaceae) and comes from Australia. Traditionally it has been used in similar ways as Tea Tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia). Niaouli is actually a little known oil but has powerful healing abilities.
Today science has shown this oil to have male hormone-like properties and is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral and is vasodilating. It is also antiparasitic against amoeba and parasites in the blood. It is used for hypertension, urinary tract and bladder infections, respiratory and sinus infections and allergies. It can also be used for genital herpes, skin lesions, all sorts of vaginal irritations and disease, cancer in those that are not hormone dependent, inflammation of the urethra, and prostate. Its main effect though is that of being an expectorant oil. It is considered in Australia to be a strengthening oil.
To use niaouli you can dilute one part essential oil with one part mixing oil or apply directly to the body. It may be inhaled directly, or diffused. This is not an oil to be taken internally however. It mixes well with lemon, tea tree, myrtle, hyssop, eucalyptus, rosemary, St. Johns wort, and orange. As for safety, niaouli is non-toxic, non-irritating and non-sensitizing. This oil is often the subject of adulteration so know your supplier.
