Researchers who have tested this plant, also known as musumusukkai in Tamil, have suggested using it as a traditional medicine remedy. It is a good diuretic, is used in the treatment of vertigo and gall bladder along with stomach problems, antipyretic, antifluentulant, antisolytic and antibronchitis. It is used in Ayurveda for various therapeutic purposes such as relief from toothache or fart and as psoriatic. Some traditional healers also use a leaf-tea or infusion of this plant to treat jaundice.

Decoctions of the leaves of this plant were used by Siddha doctors in Tamil Nadu to treat high blood pressure. The leaf extract of this plant has been shown to have hepatoprotective, immunomodulatory effects and anti-arthritic activity properties. Furthermore, Nougat Dosa consumption has been shown to significantly lower blood pressure, strengthen antioxidant capacity and reduce glycoprotein fractions in hypertensive patients.

Musumukkai strengthens the blood lipid profile and has shown beneficial effects on fibrinogen and bilirubin levels in hypertensive patients, providing a medicinal basis for the traditional use of this plant.
